I kept asking myself the same question. What if we could bring a little more life back to Main Street?
Not a big event. Not a festival with a budget and a committee. Just a reason for people to spend a Saturday morning close to home.
A quiet Main Street and one idea
Unadilla is a small town in Otoe County, right along the Highway 2 corridor east of Lincoln. It has a gas station. It has a bar and grill. It has people who wave when you drive by, and it has that thing you feel in your chest when you slow down on a two-lane road and the traffic just falls away behind you.
But Main Street was quiet. Not dead. Just quiet. The kind of quiet where you start to wonder if anybody remembers what it used to feel like when the sidewalk had people on it.
I grew up around towns like this. I live this life now, out on an acreage with my husband, our son, and three very large dogs. Small-town living is not a marketing angle for me. It is my actual Saturday. And I started to think a place like Unadilla did not need a huge overhaul. It just needed a reason.
What Small Town Saturdays actually is
So I started Small Town Saturdays in Unadilla, Nebraska. The idea is simple on purpose. Give people a reason to show up on Main Street, spend a little time, spend a little money at the places that are already here, and remember what it feels like to be part of something you can walk to.
That is it. No pressure. No pitch. Just life on Main Street for a morning.
- A reason to leave the house instead of scrolling on the couch.
- A reason to spend a few dollars at the local spots that keep the lights on all year.
- A reason to run into your neighbors and actually stop and talk.
- A reason for folks from Lincoln to drive out and see what they have been missing.
When one small business has a good Saturday, that matters here. When the gas station and the bar and grill see faces they do not usually see, that matters. Little things add up in a small town. They always have.
Why an agent cares about this
Here is the honest part. I sell homes in these communities. Unadilla, Palmyra, and Syracuse in Otoe County. Weeping Water, Louisville, Murdock, and Elmwood in Cass County. Bennet over in Lancaster County. That is my lane, and I take it seriously.
But I have never believed my job is just the house. When somebody moves out here from a starter home in Lincoln, they are not buying square footage. They are buying a Saturday morning. They are buying the walk to the gas station, the wave from the neighbor, the slower pace they have been craving for years.
So if I am going to tell people small-town living is worth it, I should be willing to show up and add to it. Not just point at a town and say it has charm. Actually put a little life back on the sidewalk.
That is why Small Town Saturdays exists. It is me putting my money where my mouth is about the thing I sell people on every week.

I say this to my clients all the time. We do not have to force anything. There will be another house if this one is not right. Love where you live.
Small Town Saturdays is the same idea, just pointed at the whole town instead of one address. You do not need a special occasion to enjoy where you live. You just need a reason to walk out the door. So we made one.
